Skipper Jack’s – Moncton

Skipper Jack’s is back! Well, it has been for a while now, but we’re so glad it has risen from the ashes of a very unfortunate fire.

Fish and Chips from here is a pretty awesome! In fact, it’s quite hard to sample the rest of their menu when it’s so good. But we have also been able to try their Shrimp, and have had one of their poutines too, which was fantastic!

The Fish and Chips:

The beer batter at Skipper’s is very well seasoned, and certainly adds a nice flavour to the fish. It’s nice and crispy too. They have fluctuated in portion sizes over the years, once going to a full-sized piece of fish (like you would get most places in the UK) and I believe they have since returned to the more familiar 2 or 3 piece options. I’ve never had bad fish here, and it always seems to be very fresh, so good marks there!

The chips are very nice, but they do tend to be closer fries (more on that in another blog post) but they’re also good!

The coleslaw is tasty too,, not overly creamy or sickly, which I’m not really a fan of.

There’s usually also a traditional wedge of lemon too, for those of you love that citrus flavour on your fish.

Overall score: It’s got to be a 8.5/10 Maybe even a 9.

I won’t bore you with reviewing the fries again! But the Shrimp come highly recommended here too. Well seasoned and a fantastic subtlety to the flavouring they have added.

Very fresh tasting again once again, although I suspect the Shrimp may not be as locally sourced as their fish are. But they must still be using something of a high quality to get these results.

Overall score: 8/10

Steak Poutine

This features those wonderful fries again of course, so we’ll skip to the steak, gravy and the curds.

I’m sometimes hesitant to order things containing steak from restaurants, because in these kinds of dishes where bits of steak are used, some restaurants can try to use poor quality meat (*cough* Boston Pizza), and it can be chewy or full of gristle, but not here! The meat was very nice! It would have been nice to have been asked how I would have liked it cooked though (I don’t remember being asked that question).

The gravy was very nice, and if you like gravy on your fish and chips, I would highly recommend it here, But there could have been more of it. I quite enjoy a very poutine though, so maybe that might be a little harsh.

The curds were nice, but since it was a little dry, not all of them melted very well, and I do like that gooey cheese!

Overall Score: 7/10 – could be an 8 or 9 with choice of how to the steak is, and a bit more gravy.

As I said near the start of this post; it’s very difficult to sample more of the menu when the Fish & Chips are so damn good, but we’ll try to do it at some point in the future, promise!

In the mean time, if you’re looking for a fantastic Fish and Chip place in Moncton? You can’t go wrong with Skipper Jack’s!
